The University of British Columbia is launching a part-time online micro-certificate to build professional capacity in quantum technologies and support workforce development. Eligible British Columbia residents may receive funding through the Stronger BC Future Skills Grant to cover the program’s tuition.
Delivered through UBC Extended Learning in partnership with UBC Geering Up and UBC Blusson QMI, the Step into Quantum program covers quantum principles, algorithms, cryptography, sensing and commercial applications. It is designed for professionals working in or alongside technology with no previous quantum science or programming experience.
Quantum technologies are moving closer to commercial use, prompting companies, financial institutions and governments to consider applications ranging from materials development and financial modelling to secure communications and sovereign capability. The shift is also creating demand for workers who can evaluate quantum opportunities and collaborate with technical specialists.
The 10-week program consists of two online courses requiring about five hours of study each week. Foundations of Quantum Technologies starts October 5, 2026 followed by Applications of Quantum Technology on November 16, 2026. The first course is a prerequisite for the second.
Participants will complete self-paced modules and attend optional weekly sessions with instructors. The curriculum includes introductory quantum programming, industry mapping and the development of an individual Quantum Readiness Plan.
The program is intended for early- and mid-career professionals, STEM graduates and workers in fields including engineering, software, cybersecurity, finance, telecommunications, research, public policy, national security and advanced manufacturing. Participants who complete the program requirements in each course will receive a UBC micro-certificate and digital badge.
UBC Extended Learning will hold a free online information session on September 9, 2026 covering the curriculum, learning outcomes and available funding.
